Problems arise in every organization.  It could be a Fortune 500 company, a school board, an advisory group, or a high school booster club.  More often than not, everybody has the same goal but thinking of a way to achieve them becomes a problem.  Many times mind mapping can help.

If you are not familiar with the concept is is a way organizing information, in this case to solve a problem.  It most resembles a cross between note taking and brainstorming with colors and lines to make order of the chaos.  There are 3 ways that this can help an organization with problem solving.

  1. Outlining.  One of the first things you will notice when using the software for problem solving is that an outline will quickly emerge.  This is one of the key element to solving a problem.  From that outline you will then start to see new branches appear.  Some of these will prove to be very useful while others are not but at least the possibility was explored.  It is in those possibilities that the solution will come to light.  The great part of this is that no one person set the outline, it  happened organically.
  2. Collaboration.  Unless the organization is an autocracy, there are people other than you that have an input into finding the solution.  Mind mapping is the perfect tool for letting people contribute to finding the answer to the issue using software, they can even contribute anonymously if they choose to.  Whether people do it anonymously or publicly it allows everybody a chance to help. Many times this can lead to some very inspired suggestions and directions.
  3. Inspired Creativity.  A great benefit of using mind mapping software is that it allows and inspires creativity while still keeping it organized.  It uses different colors for different lines of thought and different size print to show where in the process the thought lies as well as using lines to help the mind follow the thought beginning to end.  This can inspire creative solutions that would not have been found though more traditional processes.

Mind mapping is the ideal problem solving tool for an organization of any type.  It provides outlines and organization, collaboration, and inspires creative thought and places it where it needs to be.  And it is something that can help in any team decision.
