To solve our various problems in life, many of us use mind maps. Whether drawn by hand or through a mind mapping software, such maps organize our thoughts and ideas in a better way. It helps students to understand their lessons or take better notes in class. It also helps professionals to develop a product or idea and also to find solutions to problems in hand. But do all your mind maps that you draw end up helping you in a positive way? If the answer is no, then you need to learn how to draw an effective mind map and here are some points to help you in that:

1. First of all, use as minimum a number of words as possible. Just write the gist of what you want to say in the box representing a topic. Better still use image or graphics but one that represents exactly what you want to say.

2. Use tools like boundaries and colored fills to group topics that are similar or related. Within the group use arrows or any other diagram to show the relationship between them. For that, you can use comments, links, notes and other such tools.

3. From time to time, see the whole map as an outsider. If you can see the main points or topics in a clear way, then you have made a good mind map.

4. Use colors to differentiate between different branches or topics in a map. That way when you look at it in a glance, you will know what each part or branch represents. It will be easier to help you explain the map to others as well. Such visual maps are also easier to remember and if you are giving a presentation, your audiences can easily understand them and ask relevant questions.

5. A mind map especially those drawn by idea mapping software AKA mind map software should have multiple branches or layers. The main topics should be simple and short; the additional information should be presented in another layer or branch. However, make sure that each branch have same or nearly same amount of information otherwise more importance will be given to a branch with more information even if it is not that much of a priority.
