Educational Uses of Mind-Mapping for College Students
61
The very mention of college can set students yawning. We can’t blame them really with such long hours of lectures, assignments and homework. It absolutely leaves no time for a social life outside the classroom. To top it all up, there are tones of notes to be made.
Acquiring good grades is a must for students but making sense of so many subjects at once can be cumbersome. But thankfully, there is an easier way out now. This method is called Mind mapping.
This method is very handy when it comes to making notes. Once you start using mind mapping, you need not lend your fingers the agony of writing pages and pages of notes at high speed. In fact you can spend more time listening to the lecture. This is because mind mapping involves making diagrams. The diagram will be at the centre. It is the subject being taught and smaller pointers in the shapes of dialogue bubbles can be made around it. These will indicate the important points made by the professor. Each pointer can have a different color or a visual. It is said that you learn faster through visuals and colors. Therefore, you can retain the information for a longer period of time.
In the same way you can make notes for each lecture. When a student makes use of mind mapping to study, it gives them a new perspective, opening up the closed corners inside the brain. Slowly and gradually, the students can relate the subject with other texts they may have read, in short drawing from intertextuality.
Mind mapping is also known as learning map. Through mind maps you may decide upon the central theme of a particular subject and then make notes around it.
Mind maps act as stimulators. They trigger innovative ideas in the students’ minds. While it might take time for students to get the hang of it, mind mapping is relatively easy. They are very effective.
The success rate of this method of mind mapping has increased tremendously over the past few years and scores of students have also benefited from it.
