How to Use Mind Mapping Software

The hardest task in the world is to convey an idea or a set of ideas to a person or a group of people. Many people fail miserably when they attempt such a task because they do not understand how to do it.

Generally, the best way to convey an abstract concept whether it is a new insurance policy rider or a strategic plan for the organization is with mind mapping software. This software creates a visual diagram that creates images that represent the idea or ideas.

Such visual aids are routinely used to communicate with the world’s most difficult audience learning disabled children. They can also be used to introduce the company’s new strategic plan to the gang at your office. All that is required to use mind or idea mapping software is a little creativity and some basic computer skills.

There are also some strategies you can employ to effectively use idea mapping to communicate your plans. These strategies and a good mapping program are all you need for effective communication.

Tips for Using Idea Mapping Software

  • Use humor because it leaves a strong emotional impression that people will remember. It also evokes positive feels and can liven up a presentation.
  • When you use humor avoid anything that could be offensive including sexual and racially motivated humor. Such jokes generate negative emotions that impede learning so you don’t need them.
  • Make sure the map tells a story that everybody who sees it can easily understand. For example this is our new strategic plan it will reduce costs, increase efficiency, and raise profits which could give everybody in our division a bigger bonus.
  • Eliminate anything that creates negative emotions. Negative emotions will turn an audience off and cause them to tune information out.
  • Make sure the consequences of actions are outlined. In many cases communicating consequences will be a better way to get a point across. For example people who don’t have liability insurance could be sued and lose all their money. Cartoons of a greedy lawyer flush with cash and a poor person could convey this.
  • Always make sure it looks good visually. Images should be well drawn and professional looking. Anything that is too crude can drive away your audience and turn them off.
  • Tell a story people love to be entertained and they’re used to being entertained with images through movies, television, video games, comics and many other mediums. So use what people understand.
  • Do not insult your audience’s intelligence. Childish or silly images or presentations that are too simple convey the impression that you think the audience is a bunch of ignorant children. Nobody who thinks that’s what you think of them will pay attention to anything you say.

Never be afraid to ask your audience what they thought of your mind map, even if they are children. Their feedback will tell you if you succeeded or not. It could also show you how can do better next time.
