Some of you may learn a foreign language for the sheer love of languages; others may be required to learn them in line with your work. Either way it can be a daunting task. Not only do you have to learn a completely alien language, but also “un-learn” some basic concepts of your native language, that do not apply to other languages. Using mind maps can make learning easier, and even fun.

* Grouping Words: When you jot down foreign words and meanings in traditional notes form, you will end up with a stack of random and unconnected words that will be difficult to remember and comprehend. By using mind maps you can put down a central word have branches and sub-branches containing connected words related to a similar field. Start branching off using the word in your native language and then the foreign meaning. Also use plenty of pictures for illustration, as it will make understanding and finding the words easier.

* Grammar: Learning foreign words is surely great but you must also be able to use them in sentences using grammar that is proper to the foreign language. You can put down a basic question on a mind map with two answers, one right and one wrong. This will give you an idea which words should be used in different situations and contexts.

* Writing: Not all learn a foreign language to speak or to understand, some of you may have to write it too. Mind mapping minimizes writers’ block, especially in a new language where your thoughts do not flow as fluently as in case of a native language. Start by putting down the central topic and branches of sub-topics to be included. Extend these branches to include the points that will cover each sub-topic, with leads to sources for further reference. Having everything laid out clearly will help you to stay within the subject requirements, without going ‘off-topic’ and reducing the need for alterations.

Mind mapping software can help to add a variety of illustrations to the foreign words, that can’t be always drawn, and also allow easy extension of the map as your vocabulary expands.
