Mind Mapping - The Mathematical Logical Learner
69
Mathematical logical learning style is one of the eight styles that was created and documented by Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligent theory. This learning style is executed by person’s ability to reason, solve problem by using numbers and the cause and effects of relationships with ideas and concepts.
These learners are usually methodical and think in a very logical or linear order. Usually they can solve math equations in their own heads and are really into logical applications like computer programs, puzzles and games, and equations. Think of these individuals as your engineers, builders, computer programmers, electricians and math teachers.
Their strength lies in their innate ability to solve problem and build on ideas and concepts by recognizing the cause and affect applications involved. More often than other learning styles, these individuals will excel in difficult sciences like technology, chemistry, computer science, and graphic design.
With this particular learning style, using visual imagery, computers, hands on projects, and anything of a statistical and analytical nature suits their intelligence style. They strongly prefer an environment that is very tightly structured and goal- oriented and has to do with the instruction of mathematics rather than the less structured creative activities with no particular goal outcome.
Most of these individuals will yawn at literature or journal keeping activities since they excel more in reasoning and analytical structured activities like science, mechanics, statistical practical applications, and mathematics. The careers that are common for these learners would be computer programming, accounting, graphic design, drafting, mechanics, business and finance, architecture, contracting, engineering, construction, teaching science or mathematics, and chemical engineering.
Within our society today, these learning types have often been revered to be the most intelligent and practical members of schools and the workforce. They usually score very high on IQ tests based on their concrete, linear abilities, and tend to excel in problem solving skills in a very logical and pragmatic fashion.
However, even though they are quite gifted learners concerning mathematical applications, they still possess the same skill level, although differently, as the other eight learning styles.
The bias that school systems have maintained traditionally concerning this learning style has decreased over the past twenty years since more and more educators are beginning to understand the differences in intelligences and how they can be applied and encouraged equally as well as effectually within our society. This has resulted in many mind mapping software being available in the market to aid in the learning process.
